Part 1

Do you enjoy reading?

Yes, absolutely! A great way to relax to learn something new is to peruse a book… I’m so addicted to reading that sometimes I can’t even fall asleep without an hour of bedtime reading

Do you like watching movies?

No, not really… If I have some free time, I’d rather read an interesting book… Books leave us a lot of space for imagination, while in movies everything is spelled out for us… That’s why I find films boring.

What is the last book you read? And did you like it?

The last book I’ve read is “Theatre” written by William Somerset Maugham … and I absolutelyenjoyed it! Maugham is my favourite writer of all time . and I’ve read his novel from cover to cover  in 2 days… I was truly captivated by the characters and the unravelling of the plot .

How often do you go to the cinema with your friends?

Quite often, to be honest… I like catching the latest movies  with my friends, so we go to the cinema almost every week. I especially like  action movies a nd sci-fi films.

Now, have a look at the card and prepare a monologue

Describe a book or a film that had a strong impact on you. You should say:

• What was it
• When you read or saw it
• How it influenced you
• And say if you liked it and why.

A book that I’d like to talk about is called “Flowers for Algernon” written by Daniel Keyes. You won’t believe, but I picked up this novel from a shelf in a bookstore because it had a beautiful cover! Although a proverb says , I did exactly the opposite… and the book turned out to be one of the greatest things I’ve ever read… In fact, this novel is very intense and thought-provoking … It is set in form of diary entries of the protagonist – mentally-disabled man Charlie, whose IQ changes after brain surgery… It drastically changed the way I looked at how intelligence influences people’s attitude to others and to the world in general. Also, I had to overthink how many boundaries does new knowledge open and how mentally disabled people are treated in the society… In general, the book was somewhat tear-jerking for me, but I still highly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a powerful and inspirational read.

Why do you think cinemas are still popular nowadays, even though people can watch movies in their homes?

I believe that there are several reasons for it… First of all, watching a film on a big screen is a lot more fun than watching it at home… Not to mention the fact that you won’t be able to see the movie on the DVD as soon as in the movie theater… You’ll have to wait a couple of months for the  DVD release of the movie ()… Moreover, a lot of people like the atmosphere of cinema with its half-light halls, popcorn and sound effects.

What do you think about e-books?

In my opinion, a paperback or hardback  books are much better… Reading a book from an e-reader just doesn’t feel the same for me – I adore the sensation of turning pages and that special smell of paper. I think that the look and feel of a book can never be replaced by an e-reader… But I do understand usefulness of electronic books. It is very convenient to be able to carry hundreds of books in your pocket and have a possibility to read them at any time… Also, e-readers support keyword search , which paperbacks obviously do not.

Nowadays animal experiments are widely used to develop new medicines and to test the safety of other products. Some people argue that these experiments should be banned because it is morally wrong to cause animals to suffer, while others are in favour of them because of their benefits to humanity.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

It is true that medicines and other products are routinely tested on animals before they are cleared for human use. While I tend towards the viewpoint that animal testing is morally wrong, I would have to support a limited amount of animal experimentation for the development of medicines.

On the one hand, there are clear ethical arguments against animal experimentation. To use a common example of this practice, laboratory mice may be given an illness so that the effectiveness of a new drug can be measured. Opponents of such research argue that humans have no right to subject animals to this kind of trauma, and that the lives of all creatures should be respected. They believe that the benefits to humans do not justify the suffering caused, and that scientists should use alternative methods of research.

On the other hand, reliable alternatives to animal experimentation may not always be available. Supporters of the use of animals in medical research believe that a certain amount of suffering on the part of mice or rats can be justified if human lives are saved. They argue that opponents of such research might feel differently if a member of their own families needed a medical treatment that had been developed through the use of animal experimentation. Personally, I agree with the banning of animal testing for non-medical products, but I feel that it may be a necessary evil where new drugs and medical procedures are concerned.

In conclusion, it seems to me that it would be wrong to ban testing on animals for vital medical research until equally effective alternatives have been developed.(270 words, band 9)

تکنیک های تقویت Listening

وقتی می شنوید، جواب بدهید

دلیل آن که باید در همان حین که فایل صوتی را می شنوید، جواب بدهید این است که پس از شنیدن جملات به سرعت آن ها را فراموش خواهید کرد. این اتفاق ممکن است به خاطر استرس، عدم آشنایی کامل به زبان بیگانه، ناپایدار بودن جریان اطلاعات و عوامل دیگری مانند آن باشد.

معمولا بعد از شنیدن سه جمله، قادر نخواهید بود که اولی را تکرار کنید. این بدان معنی است که هنگامی که هر قسمت از آزمون به پایان می رسد، نمی توانید همه ی پاسخ ها را به یاد بیاورید. بنابراین همزمان با گوش دادن، جواب بدهید و هیچ چیز را به بعد موکول نکنید. همان طور که فایل های صوتی پخش می شوند آنها را تعقیب کنید و رو به جلو پیش بروید.

بدترین چیز در این پروسه این است که شما به صورت آبشاری، در هنگام پاسخ گویی، جواب ها را از دست بدهید. یعنی یک جواب را از دست می دهید، و سپس با صرف زمان برای آن، سوال بعدی را از دست می دهید و … این پروسه همین طور ادامه پیدا خواهد کرد. برای جلوگیری از این اتفاق، همیشه دو سوال را زیر نظر داشته باشید. ممکن است گیج کننده به نظر برسد، اما با کمی تمرین برایتان طبیعی خواهد شد و به شما کمک زیادی خواهد کرد. حتی اگر پاسخ یک سوال را از دست دادید، به از دست دادن آن رضایت دهید و به سراغ سوال بعدی بروید وگرنه سوال بعدی را هم از دست خواهید داد.

از جملات کلیشه ای در Writing بپرهیزید!

برخی از زبان آموزان برای راحت تر نوشتن، در Writing های خود از جملات و عبارات حفظ شده و کلیشه ای استفاده می کنند. این جملات بیش از اندازه توسط شرکت کنندگان استفاده می شوند و Examiner ها آن ها را حفظی تشخیص داده و نمره ای به آن ها تعلق نمی گیرد. Examiner ها طوری آموزش دیده اند که این جملات را به راحتی شناسایی می کنند، و چون این جملات سطح زبان شما را نشان نمی دهند، آن ها را نادیده می گیرند. در این قسمت به برخی از این جملات اشاره می کنیم:

This essay will discuss both sides and give an opinion at the end.

این جمله و جملات مشابه، بسیار ضعیف هستند، چون معمولا در انتهای مقدمه نوشته می شود و هیچ هدفی ندارد. سعی کنید از این گونه جملات پرهیز کنید و تنها جواب سئوال را به وضوح بیان کنید.

With the development of science and modern technology…

بسیاری از دانشجویان از جملاتی این چنین برای شروع نوشته خود استفاده می کنند. اما این گونه جملات تنها در مورد موضوعات مربوط به تکنولوژی و علوم مناسب است. بهتر است در مورد موضوعات دیگر، از یک حقیقت/Fact در مورد موضوع استفاده کنید.

In the modern era/Since the dawn of time…

این عبارات نیز در ابتدای Writing ها بسیار زیاد تکرار می شوند و فقط زمانی مناسب خواهند بود که موضوع، مقایسه ای از گذشته تا حال را داشته باشد. برخی نیز ابتدای نوشته خود را با Nowadays شروع می کنند که بسیار تکراری است!

This is a highly controversial issue.

بیشتر سئوالات آیلتس مناقشه برانگیز نیستند. مثلاً موضوعی مانند اعدام می تواند Controversial باشد، اما دیدن برنامه های ورزشی موضوعی controversial نیست! شاید در ۹۹% موضوعات مختلف مطرح در Writing لازم به استفاده از این جملات نباشد!

A recent study carried out by IMF showed that…/Research indicates that…

در آزمون آیلتس لازم نیست مثال های شما برآمده از تحقیقات علمی باشند. چرا که یا مثال شما ساختگی است و یا باید بتوانید عینا متن و منبع آن تحقیق را در نوشته ی خود ذکر کنید که ساده و پسندیده نیست. در عوض، مثال شما می تواند برآمده از شرایط خاص باشد. مثلا می توانید بنویسید:

For instance, the majority of working people do not…

In a nutshell,

برخی از این عبارت برای شروع نتیجه گیری/Conclusion استفاده می کنند. این عبارت کاملا غیررسمی است و بابت آن نمره از دست می دهید.

The are good grounds to argue in favor of/ It cannot be denied that…

این عبارات نیز تکراری و حفظی هستند. بهتر است از عبارات طبیعی تری استفاده کنید. به علاوه، برخی از این عبارات استفاده می کنند و بعد از آن ها دلایل و ایده های خود را می نویسند که کاملا اشکال دارد چون مثل وقتی مثلا می نویسید

It is undeniable

یعنی چیزی که می نویسید حقیقت محض است!

در انتها، سعی کنید به جای حفظ کردن جملات و عباراتی که کاملاً برای Examiner قابل شناسایی هستند و نوشته تان را از حالت طبیعی خارج می کند، یک Writing ساده اما درست بنویسید. قطعا نمره بهتری خواهید گرفت.

برای کسب نمره بالا به چقدر زمان نیاز هست؟

یکی از سخت ترین سوالات این هست که چقدر زمان میبره تا نمره مطلوب خود مثلا نمره هفت به بالا بگیرید. طبق آمار منتشر شده از کمبریج برای افزایش یک نمره بند اسکور به چیزی حدود سه الی چهار ماه زمان و بیش از صد ساعت مطالعه شخصی نیاز است. هر چه سطح زبان قوی تری داشته باشید زمان کمتری نیاز خواهید داشت. بطور معمول افراد با سطح مبتدی حدود شش الی هفت ماه، با مطالعه بصورت شش روز در هفته، زمان نیاز خواهند داشت تا به سطح متوسطه برسند که البته این زمان در مورد همه یکسان نیست و ممکن است کمی بیشتر و یا کمتر شود.

افراد با سطح زبان متوسط به بالا نیز حدود شش الی هفت ماه زمان نیاز خواهند داشت تا به نمره هفت به بالا دست پیدا کنند. پس اگر فکر میکنید در آینده به مدرک آیلتس نیاز خواهید داشت، از همین امروز شروع به مطالعه و برنامه ریزی نمایید و با توجه به سطح زبان خودتان بظور منطقی زمان بندی و برنامه ریزی نمایید.

As we mentioned in our previous lesson, students with good fluency speak smoothly, not quickly. It is a common misconception that good fluency means very rapid speech.

If you listen to how native English speakers talk, they do not normally speak very quickly. Listen to native speakers on the radio, news or movies and this will give you a good idea about how quickly they speak.

Trying to speak too quickly in any language will cause a loss of coherence because your brain simply can’t keep up with your mouth. Combine this with speaking in a second language under exam conditions and the result is going to be a loss of coherence and lots of mistakes.

Solution– Focus on speaking calmly and smoothly. Listen to native speakers and try to copy their pace of speech.

This will not only help your fluency, but will also give you more time to think of ideas and find the correct grammar and vocabulary.
