IELTS Advertising Vocabulary

You may be asked questions about advertising in your country. Read the following IELTS-style questions and answers below and pay attention to the phrases in bold. Use the ‘Definitions’ section at the bottom of the page to check the meaning of any phrases you don’t understand.

Part 1-style questions

Examiner: Are there any TV channels in your country that don’t have adverts?
Loraine: No … they’re all commercial channels and show adverts all day long … too many really … and there’s also a lot of product placement going on … especially in soap operas where they place an item just behind the actors.

Examiner: Do you enjoy watching adverts on TV?
Karin: No … not really … I hate commercial breaks during a film … it really spoils the flow … and during prime time viewing they seem to squeeze even more ads in than usual … celebrity endorsements also get on my nerves … everyone knows they’re only doing it because they’re getting paid.

Examiner: What are the best ways for ordinary people to advertise something they want to sell in your country?
Marianne: The simplest way is to place an advert in something like the classified ads section of a local paper … or there’s the Internet of course … there are lots of sites like eBay where you can buy and sell things online.

Part 2-style task

Describe an advert you once saw that was very effective.  You should say

• where this advert appeared
• when you saw it
• what it was advertising

and say why you thought it was so effective.

Max: OK … well this was about 4 years ago … I was looking for some software to create videos … one day I got an email from a mailing list I’d signed up to … there was a link in it to a press release … a company had written something about a new product that was similar to what I was looking for … at the end of the press release there was a link to the sales page … I hadn’t heard of the company but I was interested and clicked the link to the ad …. what caught my attention immediately were the number of testimonials from people who had bought the software … I think testimonials are like the online equivalent of word of mouth advertising and are really persuasive … anyway … when I got to the bottom of the page there was a great big call to action button inviting me to buy … I was totally persuaded and ended up making a purchase … what made it so effective I think was the power of those testimonials … they’d been written by people very much like me … they’d had a need and the software had obviously turned out to be just what they were looking for … when you think that this was a newish company they wouldn’t have had any brand awareness at all  … they probably wouldn’t have had much of a budget for advertising … obviously you wouldn’t advertise a product like this through the mass media on TV … they probably didn’t even have an advertising agency to support them …and yet they’d managed to create a great deal of brand loyalty from previous customers … I think that was really effective.

Part 3-style questions

Examiner: What is it that makes an advert effective?
Spencer: Well … when a company launches a product they have to consider the Internet … especially how it can be used to spread the word on social media … so in this context a video that goes viral is probably the most effective type of advert you could make.

Examiner: What are the advantages to companies of advertising on the Internet rather than TV?
Stelios: I’d imagine the main advantage is you can reach your target audience much more effectively … if you bring out a niche product for example … or you have a tight advertising budget … you can advertise on particular sites that the people you want to reach visit … that’s not something you can do on TV.

Examiner: What things do advertising companies do that might give it a bad name?
Raol: For me the most irritating is cold calling … we must get two or three of these every day at work … then there’s junk mail that gets posted through the letterbox … and of course the online equivalent of this … spam emails … I think it’s this kind of advertising that tends to annoy people.

• to cold call: to call someone with the aim of selling something without them asking you to do so
• commercial break: the short period during TV program when advertisements are shown
• commercial channel: TV channels that make money from showing advertisements
• to go viral: to quickly become extremely popular on the Internet through social media
• junk mail: unwanted promotional leaflets and letters
• to launch a product: to introduce a new product
• mailing list: a list of names and contact details used by a company to send information and advertisements
• mass media: large media outlets like TV, newspapers and magazines
• niche product: a product that is aimed at a distinct group of people
• to place an advert: to put an advert somewhere
• press release: something written by a company for newspapers and magazines and websites to share and publish
• prime time: the time during the viewing schedule when most people watch TV or listen to a broadcast
• product placement: to advertise a product by using it as a prop in a TV show or film
• sales page: a page specifically used to promote a product or service

• social media: websites that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.

IELTS Speaking vocabulary for book and films topic

Part 1

Do you enjoy reading?

Yes, absolutely! A great way to relax to learn something new is to peruse a book… I’m so addicted to reading that sometimes I can’t even fall asleep without an hour of bedtime reading

Do you like watching movies?

No, not really… If I have some free time, I’d rather read an interesting book… Books leave us a lot of space for imagination, while in movies everything is spelled out for us… That’s why I find films boring.

What is the last book you read? And did you like it?

The last book I’ve read is “Theatre” written by William Somerset Maugham … and I absolutelyenjoyed it! Maugham is my favourite writer of all time . and I’ve read his novel from cover to cover  in 2 days… I was truly captivated by the characters and the unravelling of the plot .

How often do you go to the cinema with your friends?

Quite often, to be honest… I like catching the latest movies  with my friends, so we go to the cinema almost every week. I especially like  action movies a nd sci-fi films.

Part 2

Now, have a look at the card and prepare a monologue

Describe a book or a film that had a strong impact on you. You should say:

• What was it
• When you read or saw it
• How it influenced you
• And say if you liked it and why.

A book that I’d like to talk about is called “Flowers for Algernon” written by Daniel Keyes. You won’t believe, but I picked up this novel from a shelf in a bookstore because it had a beautiful cover! Although a proverb says , I did exactly the opposite… and the book turned out to be one of the greatest things I’ve ever read… In fact, this novel is very intense and thought-provoking … It is set in form of diary entries of the protagonist – mentally-disabled man Charlie, whose IQ changes after brain surgery… It drastically changed the way I looked at how intelligence influences people’s attitude to others and to the world in general. Also, I had to overthink how many boundaries does new knowledge open and how mentally disabled people are treated in the society… In general, the book was somewhat tear-jerking for me, but I still highly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a powerful and inspirational read.

Part 3

 

Why do you think cinemas are still popular nowadays, even though people can watch movies in their homes?

I believe that there are several reasons for it… First of all, watching a film on a big screen is a lot more fun than watching it at home… Not to mention the fact that you won’t be able to see the movie on the DVD as soon as in the movie theater… You’ll have to wait a couple of months for the  DVD release of the movie ()… Moreover, a lot of people like the atmosphere of cinema with its half-light halls, popcorn and sound effects.

What do you think about e-books?

In my opinion, a paperback or hardback  books are much better… Reading a book from an e-reader just doesn’t feel the same for me – I adore the sensation of turning pages and that special smell of paper. I think that the look and feel of a book can never be replaced by an e-reader… But I do understand usefulness of electronic books. It is very convenient to be able to carry hundreds of books in your pocket and have a possibility to read them at any time… Also, e-readers support keyword search , which paperbacks obviously do not.

We cannot help everyone in the world that needs help, so we should only be concerned with our own communities and countries.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Some people believe that we should not help people in other countries as long as there are problems in our own society. I disagree with this view because I believe that we should try to help as many people as possible.

On the one hand, I accept that it is important to help our neighbours and fellow citizens. In most communities, there are people who are impoverished or disadvantaged in some way. It is possible to find homeless people, for example, in even the wealthiest of cities, and for those who are concerned about this problem, there are usually opportunities to volunteer time or give money to support these people. In the UK, people can help in a variety of ways, from donating clothing to serving free food in a soup kitchen. As the problems are on our doorstep, and there are obvious ways to help, I can understand why some people feel that we should prioritize local charity.

At the same time, I believe that we have an obligation to help those who live beyond our national borders. In some countries, the problems that people face are much more serious than those in our own communities, and it is often even easier to help. For example, when children are dying from curable diseases in African countries, governments and individuals in richer countries can save lives simply by paying for vaccines that already exist. A small donation to an international charity might have a much greater impact than helping in our local area.

In conclusion, it is true that we cannot help everyone, but in my opinion national boundaries should not stop us from helping those who are in need. (280 words)

تشخیص کلمات کلیدی در Reading و Listening

اغلب آزمون دهندگان IELTS در تشخیص کلمات کلیدی یا key words در ریدینگ و لیسنینگ مشکل دارند. لیست ده موردی زیر میتواند کمک کننده باشد و در صورت تردید فقط و فقط به ده مورد ذیل بسنده شود:

افعالی که حالت علت و معلول دارند مثل bring about, lead to…

و اژگان محدود کننده مثل only…

مقادیر کمی مثل all, majority, little…

Nowadays animal experiments are widely used to develop new medicines and to test the safety of other products. Some people argue that these experiments should be banned because it is morally wrong to cause animals to suffer, while others are in favour of them because of their benefits to humanity.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

It is true that medicines and other products are routinely tested on animals before they are cleared for human use. While I tend towards the viewpoint that animal testing is morally wrong, I would have to support a limited amount of animal experimentation for the development of medicines.

On the one hand, there are clear ethical arguments against animal experimentation. To use a common example of this practice, laboratory mice may be given an illness so that the effectiveness of a new drug can be measured. Opponents of such research argue that humans have no right to subject animals to this kind of trauma, and that the lives of all creatures should be respected. They believe that the benefits to humans do not justify the suffering caused, and that scientists should use alternative methods of research.

On the other hand, reliable alternatives to animal experimentation may not always be available. Supporters of the use of animals in medical research believe that a certain amount of suffering on the part of mice or rats can be justified if human lives are saved. They argue that opponents of such research might feel differently if a member of their own families needed a medical treatment that had been developed through the use of animal experimentation. Personally, I agree with the banning of animal testing for non-medical products, but I feel that it may be a necessary evil where new drugs and medical procedures are concerned.

In conclusion, it seems to me that it would be wrong to ban testing on animals for vital medical research until equally effective alternatives have been developed.(270 words, band 9)

توضیح: شایعاتی در فضای مجازی از سوی برخی افراد و موسسات سودجو منتشر میشود که سنترهای ایرانی به دلیل مواردی همچون تقلب های سازمان یافته یا فروش سؤال، تعلیق شده اند.

توجه داشته باشید که اگر کوچکترین تخلفی در این زمینه وجود داشت، قطعا نام موسساتی همچون پروشات و شکوه هنوز جزو موسسات مورد تأیید سازمان سنجش نبودند!

هیچ اختلاف مالی بین مراکز ایرانی و IDP که منجر به تعلیق آزمونهای آنها شود وجود نداشته است.

بر خلاف تمامی شایعات، مجوز مراکز پروشات و شکوه به هیچ عنوان لغو نشده است. با مراجعه به سایت رسمی سازمان سنجش میتوان نام این مؤسسات را در لیست مراکز مجاز (این لینک) مشاهده کرد.

پنل ثبت نام مراکز پروشات و شکوه از سوی IDP معلق شده است.

تکنیک های تقویت Listening

وقتی می شنوید، جواب بدهید

دلیل آن که باید در همان حین که فایل صوتی را می شنوید، جواب بدهید این است که پس از شنیدن جملات به سرعت آن ها را فراموش خواهید کرد. این اتفاق ممکن است به خاطر استرس، عدم آشنایی کامل به زبان بیگانه، ناپایدار بودن جریان اطلاعات و عوامل دیگری مانند آن باشد.

معمولا بعد از شنیدن سه جمله، قادر نخواهید بود که اولی را تکرار کنید. این بدان معنی است که هنگامی که هر قسمت از آزمون به پایان می رسد، نمی توانید همه ی پاسخ ها را به یاد بیاورید. بنابراین همزمان با گوش دادن، جواب بدهید و هیچ چیز را به بعد موکول نکنید. همان طور که فایل های صوتی پخش می شوند آنها را تعقیب کنید و رو به جلو پیش بروید.

بدترین چیز در این پروسه این است که شما به صورت آبشاری، در هنگام پاسخ گویی، جواب ها را از دست بدهید. یعنی یک جواب را از دست می دهید، و سپس با صرف زمان برای آن، سوال بعدی را از دست می دهید و … این پروسه همین طور ادامه پیدا خواهد کرد. برای جلوگیری از این اتفاق، همیشه دو سوال را زیر نظر داشته باشید. ممکن است گیج کننده به نظر برسد، اما با کمی تمرین برایتان طبیعی خواهد شد و به شما کمک زیادی خواهد کرد. حتی اگر پاسخ یک سوال را از دست دادید، به از دست دادن آن رضایت دهید و به سراغ سوال بعدی بروید وگرنه سوال بعدی را هم از دست خواهید داد.

از جملات کلیشه ای در Writing بپرهیزید!

برخی از زبان آموزان برای راحت تر نوشتن، در Writing های خود از جملات و عبارات حفظ شده و کلیشه ای استفاده می کنند. این جملات بیش از اندازه توسط شرکت کنندگان استفاده می شوند و Examiner ها آن ها را حفظی تشخیص داده و نمره ای به آن ها تعلق نمی گیرد. Examiner ها طوری آموزش دیده اند که این جملات را به راحتی شناسایی می کنند، و چون این جملات سطح زبان شما را نشان نمی دهند، آن ها را نادیده می گیرند. در این قسمت به برخی از این جملات اشاره می کنیم:

This essay will discuss both sides and give an opinion at the end.

این جمله و جملات مشابه، بسیار ضعیف هستند، چون معمولا در انتهای مقدمه نوشته می شود و هیچ هدفی ندارد. سعی کنید از این گونه جملات پرهیز کنید و تنها جواب سئوال را به وضوح بیان کنید.

With the development of science and modern technology…

بسیاری از دانشجویان از جملاتی این چنین برای شروع نوشته خود استفاده می کنند. اما این گونه جملات تنها در مورد موضوعات مربوط به تکنولوژی و علوم مناسب است. بهتر است در مورد موضوعات دیگر، از یک حقیقت/Fact در مورد موضوع استفاده کنید.

In the modern era/Since the dawn of time…

این عبارات نیز در ابتدای Writing ها بسیار زیاد تکرار می شوند و فقط زمانی مناسب خواهند بود که موضوع، مقایسه ای از گذشته تا حال را داشته باشد. برخی نیز ابتدای نوشته خود را با Nowadays شروع می کنند که بسیار تکراری است!

This is a highly controversial issue.

بیشتر سئوالات آیلتس مناقشه برانگیز نیستند. مثلاً موضوعی مانند اعدام می تواند Controversial باشد، اما دیدن برنامه های ورزشی موضوعی controversial نیست! شاید در ۹۹% موضوعات مختلف مطرح در Writing لازم به استفاده از این جملات نباشد!

A recent study carried out by IMF showed that…/Research indicates that…

در آزمون آیلتس لازم نیست مثال های شما برآمده از تحقیقات علمی باشند. چرا که یا مثال شما ساختگی است و یا باید بتوانید عینا متن و منبع آن تحقیق را در نوشته ی خود ذکر کنید که ساده و پسندیده نیست. در عوض، مثال شما می تواند برآمده از شرایط خاص باشد. مثلا می توانید بنویسید:

For instance, the majority of working people do not…

In a nutshell,

برخی از این عبارت برای شروع نتیجه گیری/Conclusion استفاده می کنند. این عبارت کاملا غیررسمی است و بابت آن نمره از دست می دهید.

The are good grounds to argue in favor of/ It cannot be denied that…

این عبارات نیز تکراری و حفظی هستند. بهتر است از عبارات طبیعی تری استفاده کنید. به علاوه، برخی از این عبارات استفاده می کنند و بعد از آن ها دلایل و ایده های خود را می نویسند که کاملا اشکال دارد چون مثل وقتی مثلا می نویسید

It is undeniable

یعنی چیزی که می نویسید حقیقت محض است!

در انتها، سعی کنید به جای حفظ کردن جملات و عباراتی که کاملاً برای Examiner قابل شناسایی هستند و نوشته تان را از حالت طبیعی خارج می کند، یک Writing ساده اما درست بنویسید. قطعا نمره بهتری خواهید گرفت.

چی بگم؟ من تو فارسی هم ایده ندارم.

ایده پردازی یا Brainstorming ideas یکی از مهمترین مهارت های لازم به ویژه در دو مهارت نوشتن و صحبت کردن می باشد. معمولا در پاسخ به سوالات و موضوعات آزمون احساس میکنیم که حتی تو فارسی هم ایده نداریم چه برسه به انگلیسی و یا اینکه ایده های ما اینقدر پیچیده هستند که نمی تونیم اون ها رو به انگلیسی به رشته کلام یا نگارش در بیاریم که این هم خودش مشکل بزرگی هست.

برای بهترین ایده پردازی به تمرین زیادی نیاز دارید. ساده فکر کنید ولی نه سطحی، از زوایای مختلف به یک موضوع نگاه کنید و بصورت کلی به موضوعات یا سوالات پاسخ ندهید.

فراموش نکنید که یک نویسنده خوب قبل از شروع کردن به نوشتن باید بداند که نگارش وی، کِی و کجا تمام خواهد شد، دقیقا خلاف روش نویسندگان آماتور که پس از دیدن موضوع شروع به نوشتن می کنند.

برای گرفتن نمره خوب، ۷ به بالا، در دومهارت نوشتن و صحبت کردن، حتما به ایده ها و یا دلایل خوب برای پاسخ به موضوع سوال نیاز خواهید داشت. ایده پردازی خوب، مهمترین قسمت انشا نویسی است. مهم نیست که این کار را به زبان فارسی انجام می دهید یا انگلیسی اما فراموش نکنید که در نهایت باید ایده های شما به زبان انگلیسی به رشته نگارش تبدیل شوند، پس از حالا بهتر است تا با استفاده از کلمات خاص موضوعTopic Specific Vocabulary و همچنین همجوارهاCollocations از همین اول به زبان انگلیسی شروع به تمرین ایده پردازی کنیم. برای اینکار شاید لازم باشد از دیکشنری استفاده کنید.
